Nigeria had to share the spoils with the Burkina Faso as they surrendered their 1-0 lead very deep into added time in the second half, while the Zambians could not get one over a plucky 10-man Ethiopian team.

Stephen Keshi will be buoyed by the fact that his team almost always had the game against Burkina Faso under control until Ambrose Efe’s sending off while Herve Renard will have told his boys that they will have to up the ante to get a positive result against Nigeria.

The first round of matches in Group C ended as it started with no team ahead of the other. Zambia and Nigeria both failed to protect 1-0 leads against less important sides – Ethiopia and Burkina Faso respectively.

Friday’s fixture will be like a final for the Super Eagles and the Chipolopolo. The smallest difference could play a huge role in defining the fate of these two giants. Africa Cup of Nations winning coach Herve Renard has a huge problem to solve as his men have not won a single match since November 2012.

Zambia’s record in their last six matches reads three losses followed by three draws. They have also scored only twice during this torrid period. Defending the AFCON crown is a hard task which requires getting out of the group stages in the first place.

Nigeria say they are building a team for the future, according to coach Stephen Keshi and Friday could provide a good indication on how far they have progressed.

But while the first game at 3pm GMT will be the one for the purist, the next at 6pm pitting Ethiopia against Burkina Faso will draw the fans and passion.
